The Things They Carried

Tuesday, 17 September 2024 | daringfireball.net

A great, well-considered writeup of the state of Apple one week after the latest iPhone / Apple Watch release event. Gruber is one of the few Apple pundits (and tech journalists in general) that I actually like, and this timely piece captures a lot of how I feel about Apple.

A while ago I found myself considering leaving the Apple ecosystem (spoiler: I haven't) - I wrote a lot of drafts about my thinking at the time that I never published, but this article has me considering finishing off that piece with all my reasons for coming full-circle. Maybe I'll resurrect my blog and do just that.

Basic Things

Monday, 9 September 2024 | matklad.github.io

After working on the initial stages of several largish projects, I accumulated a list of things that share the following three properties:

  • they are irrelevant while the project is small,
  • they are a productivity multiplier when the project is large,
  • they are much harder to introduce down the line.

Leave something for tomorrow

The best advice I have for that is to always leave your code unfinished the day before. That way I always know I can come back to a small problem that may only require three minutes to fix a test, or write a new method, or whatever the case is. Once I've been doing code for five or ten minutes, I tend to quickly become sucked into the problem and it's much easier to jump into the harder code at that point. Same rationale for stretching before doing exercise, basically.

Orbit - a CSS framework for radial constructs

Tuesday, 20 August 2024 | zumerlab.github.io

I love the whimsical nature of Orbit’s API, which requires a single "big bang" element on the page, and uses a "gravity-spot" class for creating an area with a radial layout. The library comes with support for adding orbits, slices, satellites, capsules, and more around user-defined gravity spots.

Serious workspace envy.

I think I'm going to start looking at static (as opposed to standing) corner desks again for my own office.

Withings ScanWatch 2 and Light review: simple vibes for the tech-fatigued

Sunday, 10 March 2024 | www.theverge.com

I've recently started wearing my first generation ScanWatch (which has a very similar design) again as my daily driver in place of of my Apple Watch Ultra, and so much of this review rings true.

The only things I would disagree with is the critique of the navigation and the digital display (alas the original ScanWatch does not have OLED) - I find the display more than sufficient for what it needs to convey (this coming from an Apple Watch Ultra user) and the navigation is well executed, considering the only means of interaction is a digital crown.

Get ready for compliments

Funnily enough, just a couple of days ago I was out for lunch with some work colleagues and one of them did compliment my watch (which in turn started a whole discussion about smartbands and watches).
